LA JOLLA, CA-- The Concordia Eagles were defeated by the University of California San Diego Tritons in overtime, 2-1, in the season opener on Thursday, September 3rd at 7 pm. 

The first half proved to be a defensive battle between the Eagles and the Tritons after over a combined dozen shots between the two teams resulted in a halftime score knotted at zero.  The scoring started soon after the start of the second half, when Kendall Reekstin scored her first goal of the season off of her head to put the Eagles in the lead, 1-0.  The Eagles fought hard to defend their lead but the Triton's Kiera Bocchino tied the game 1-1 with just over 23 minutes remaining in regulation.  Goal keeper Jazmin Alvarez made a crucial save with under 20 seconds remaining to force an overtime period.  The Eagles came out strong in overtime with a shot by Natalie Werner, which was just wide of the goal posts and another by Brianna Meyer but was saved by Triton's goalkeeper, Kelcie Brodsky.  The Tritons were relentless down the stretch when a shot was blocked by Brie Diaz and then rebounded by Jordyn McNutt who subsequently scored the game-winning goal.  It was her first of the season.

The Eagles had a total of 12 shots on the night and goalkeeper, Jazmin Alvarez recorded 11 saves.

"These girls played really well tonight," CUI head coach Chris Gould said.  "They worked incredibly hard for one another.  We have a special group and look forward to Saturday."

The Eagles drop to 0-1 to start the season and will look to improve to 1-1 on Saturday, September 5th in Los Angeles as they take on California State University of LA at 7 pm.
