The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles were edged 1-0 by UC San Diego in their season opener and NCAA DII debut on Tuesday night, September 8, in San Diego, CA.
By the Numbers: Nathaniel Bloom, a true freshman out of Encinitas and San Dieguito High School Academy, scored his first collegiate goal in the 26th minute and UC San Diego held on to defeat Concordia. Jose Garfias, Isaac Gettis, Connor Gordon, and Chris Rodriguez all fired two shots, with all but Garfias putting a shot on target. Jordan Brinkley made four saves in goal for CUI.
The Difference: Bloom's goal at the 25:21 mark was from close range after Eric Young headed the ball down for the assist. CUI's shots were doubled by UCSD, 22-11.
Critical Plays: The Eagles put one shot on frame prior to the UCSD goal. Jeremy Gordon and Connor Gordon each took shots right before halftime. Connor Gordon's header missed wide left at 84:32, CUI's only shot over the last 10 minutes.
What it Means: CUI fell to 0-1 and UCSD improved to 1-1-1 on the young season.
