The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles picked up a vital road win over Point Loma on Wednesday, 83-71, in San Diego.
By the Numbers: JT Roach shot five-of-six from the field for 17 points for CUI, and Stephen Grosey added 17 as well. Matt Scott scored 16 and Thomas Martin added 12. Scott also led with seven rebounds.
The Difference: CUI outscored the Sea Lions in the paint, 40-22, and shot 60% from the field while holding PLNU to 40%. That made up for the difference of PLNU hitting 10 threes.
Critical Plays: The Eagles led early in the contest but PLNU grabbed the lead and then the teams traded back and forth. Mike Mellinger hit a three at 7:48 to put the Eagles back up by three. PLNU took back control and led 33-28 at the half. Six minutes into the second half after a free throw from Case Bruton CUI had tied the game at 44. PLNU took the lead back by eight, but CUI responded with an 11-3 run to tie the game. A steal and dunk by Scott at 4:58 and layup from Grosey that followed put Concordia up 71-64 with four minutes to play. PLNU chipped the advantage down to two with 2:26 left, but JT Roach came back with a three-point play. The Eagles made their free throws from there and won 83-71.
What it Means: The Eagles picked up a valuable road win and improved to 12-3 and 5-2 in conference.
