Eagles Fall To Point Loma 61-81

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles women's basketball was defeated on the road against Point Loma 81-61 on Wednesday night in San Diego.

The Difference:  Haley Brown led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points.  Tyler Crockom and Elizabeth Rudd were able to each real in four defensive rebounds while contributing seven points.  The Eagles turned the ball over 23 times and gave up 20 points compared to Point Lomas 10 turnovers.  However, CUI was able to pass the ball well dishing 17 assists on the evening.  Both teams shot well from beyond the arc as the Eagles were 11-22, shooting 50%.  Point Loma was able to put up 26 points in the paint.  CUI allowed 10 offensive rebounds, which translated into 12 second chance points for the Sea Lions.

Critical Plays:  The Eagles started the game 2-0 when Brittany Stafford made a layup from a pass by Tyler Crockom.  The Sea Lions were to quick to respond with a 6-0 run to put them up 8-2.  The Eagles went on a 8-3 run to trail 11-10 after Haley Brown and Ashley Earles knocked down two consecutive threes.  The Eagles weren't able to stay with the Sea Lions and went into the second quarter down 30-18.  The Sea Lions extended their lead in the second quarter to 21 but the Eagles finished the half strong with a three pointer by Elizabeth Rudd followed by Tyler Crockom and Jasmine Davis knocking down jumpers in the last minute to cut the lead to 14 at 45-31.  In the third quarter, the Eagles found themselves down 68-43 headed into the fourth.  CUI fought hard to close the gap as Elizabeth Rudd, Haley Brown, and Ryan Robinson hit three pointers but the Eagles ran out of clock and lost 81-61.

"Their conversion off of our live turnovers was the difference in the game.  We failed to value the ball tonight and it hurt us.  We were surely aggressive enough to shoot more than eight free throws but allowing 30 points in the opening quarter was not indicative of the defensive tenacity we need," says Eagles head coach Trisha Stafford-Odom.  "Haley Brown was remarkable on both sides of the ball.  She is really becoming a dependable leader for this team and when her fire spreads in the locker room, we will produce an amazing product."

What it Means:  Following the loss, the Eagles drop to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the PacWest.

Up Next:  The Eagles will take on the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts on Saturday, January 16th at 5:30 pm in CU Arena in Irvine, Calif.
