The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles suffered their first conference loss of the year on Tuesday night, 80-72 inside CU Arena.
By the Numbers: Stephen Grosey led CUI with 15 points, and grabbed six rebounds. Justin Davis and JT Roach added 12 each. Davis added seven assists and Martin Thomas added six.
The Difference: The Cougars shot 63% from three and 54% from the field, and won the rebounding battle 36-28.
Critical Plays: APU used the three ball early to jump to a 10-4 lead and it expanded to a 15-6 edge. Mike Mellinger dropped a three in the corner but APU came right back with one. The Cougars continued to shoot the lights out and led 24-13 with 11 minutes left. Matt Scott hit a three to get it back within six. Case Bruton rattled home a three in transition and CUI led 26-25 at the six minute mark. APU hit a three and took a 37-34 lead into the half. The lead expanded to 52-43 APU with 12 minutes left. An APU three made it 60-48 Cougars. Stephen Grosey hit a three with 1:47 left, and CUI trailed 73-64. But APU was able to finish the game, 80-72.
What it Means: Concordia dropped their first PacWest game of the year, going to 10-2 and 3-1 in conference. Azusa Pacific improved to 9-3 and 3-1.
