The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles downed a pesky Hawaii Hilo bunch, 90-80, inside CU Arena on Thursday.
By the Numbers: JT Roach and Matt Scott led the way with 18 points each, and Geoff Gerlach was one rebound short of a double-double with 14 and nine. Justin Davis supplied 13 points and Stephen Grosey fed the offense with eight assists.
The Difference: CUI led in bench points, 35-9, and shot 54% while holding the Vulcans at 47%.
Critical Plays: Through a quick pace to the first media timeout, CUI led 12-8 on two Case Bruton threes. The teams traded the lead through the next four minutes until Matt Scott's scoop and score made it 19-16. The teams play even over the next few minutes. Geoff Gerlach cleaned up a miss and CUI led 33-25 with three minutes left. The Vulcans hung tough though and made it 35-32 by the final media timeout. A late bucket from Scott helped CUI to a 39-35 lead. A three-point play from Scott early in the second half made it 46-39 CUI and buckets from Martin Thomas increased it to 51-42. As UHH got within two, JT Roach dialed home a three at the 13-minute mark. Roach hit a three and Justin Davis finished two foul shots to help Concordia to a 81-69 lead with 4:24 left. The Eagles secured the 90-80 win.
What it Means: The Eagles regained their momentum and improved to 11-2 and 4-1 in the conference against the winless Vulcans.
