CUI Gets Three Chances, Comes Up Just Short In Double OT Against Dixie

The Rundown:  The Concordia Eagles fell to Dixie State in a double-overtime thriller inside CU Arena, 81-80 on Saturday.

By the Numbers: Justin Davis scored 19 points off the bench to lead CUI.  Stephen Grosey grabbed a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Matt Scott scored 10 points.  Grosey also led the team with four assists.

The Difference:  CUI had a chance to win the game on the last shot in regulation, and at the end of both overtimes.  They were outscored in the paint, 38-32, but won in points off turnovers, 22-11.  The Red Storm went to the line 10 more times than CUI and made nine more foul shots.

Critical Plays:  Matt Scott opened the game with a three-point play.  Adam Turner had three tip-ins, including a slam dunk, and CUI led 18-13 with nine minutes left in the half.  DSU came back to tie at 20 and led 22-20 before Grosey answered with a three.  Justin Davis pulled up in transition to put CUI back up, 29-28.  A putback sent Dixie to the locker rooms up 31-32.  Martin Thomas broke the tie nine minutes into the second half with a steal and scoop, 46-44.  The Red Storm took the lead 55-51 with seven minutes left and increased it to 60-53 with four and a half remaining.  JT Roach nailed a huge three with minute left to tie at 61.  CUI's last second shot was blocked and the teams headed to overtime.  DSU hit a three to open the extra frame.  CUI scored four straight in response, but DSU scored the next four right back.  Two layups from Grosey regained the advantage.  Geoff Gerlach tied the game at 70 with a free throw.  CUI could not hit the game-winner and headed to a third OT.  After four Red Storm points to start Grosey scored a three-point play.  The play slowed to free throws at both ends and CUI trailed 77-73 with 1:27 remaining.  Case Bruton hit a jumper to close to 81-80 with 24 seconds left, but the game-winner for CUI went long and DSU took the win.

What it Means:  CUI dropped their second home PacWest game of the week, and fell to 11-3 and 4-2 in conference.

Up Next:  The Eagles travel to Point Loma at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, January 13.
