The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles used an impressive second-half to down BYU-Hawaii 87-65 inside CU Arena on Monday night.
By the Numbers: Stephen Grosey had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Matt Scott scored 21 and grabbed 10 boards. Case Bruton scored 17 and Justin Davis scored 13. Martin Thomas had seven assists and Grosey had six.Â
The Difference: CUI outscored BYUH by 20 in the second half and 46-20 in the paint. They scored 25 points off 15 Seasider turnovers.
Critical Plays: The Seasiders controlled early leading 11-4. Case Bruton hit a three to make it 16-9. Bruton scored four straight from the line and Matt Scott scored in transition to pull to 23-18. After a three from Bruton, CUI scratched back 32-27. BYUH pushed ahead again late, Scott hit a late three, and BYUH led 40-32 at the half. Martin Thomas hit a three to cap a CUI fast start to the second half, and CUI led 45-44. Scott broke away to make it 49-46 Eagles and another steal led to Gerlach making it 51-46. Gerlach pumped and finished in the lane, and CUI led by 10, 66-56 with 10 minutes left. Justin Davis nailed a step back and CUI led 72-58. The pace slowed from there and BYUH attempted to get back in the game from the free throw line. CUI held them off, scored late, won 87-65.Â
What it Means:Â Concordia improved to 19-3 and 12-2 in the PacWest, and with Azusa Pacific losing to HPU that night, gained a two-game lead in the conference.
