CUI Gets Close, But Edged By Cal Baptist On The Road

The Rundown:  The Concordia Eagles got within five in the second half, but eventually fell at Cal Baptist on Monday night, 81-70, snapping their 11-game win streak. 

By the Numbers:  Geoff Gerlach was seven-for-seven from the field and led CUI with 15 points.  JT Roach added 13 off the bench and Matt Scott had 12.  Scott also led the squad with five rebounds and Martin Thomas had eight assists.

The Difference:  CUI was outrebounded 42-23 and CBU made 22-of-26 from the foul line and CUI was eight-of-16.

Critical Plays:  Martin Thomas made a steal minutes in and dished to Case Bruton under the basket for an Eagles bucket.  JT Roach broke some early silence at 14:23 in the first half and hit a 3 for the Eagles takin it to 12-8.  With just over 12 minutes left CBU scored two break away buckets to tie the game at 12, after the Lancers went on an 18-0 run from the Lancers thanks to Gelaun Wheelwright's 3-pointer from 10 feet behind the arc which caused CUI to call a timeout with 11:23 on the clock and another with 8:20 left on the clock.  Matt Scott broke the 18-0 run with just over 8 minutes left in the first half but CBU quickly responded with a bucket from Alexander Birketoft.  Concordia forced a turnover with 2:42 on the clock and took advantage of the opportunity with Geoff Gerlach backing the Lancer defender down and getting the bucket.  CBU ended the half with a 38-22 lead.  Concordia began the 2nd half with possession and Matt Scott quickly answered with a reverse layup.  Concordia came out to a quick 4-0 run and forced g a CBU timeout.  Concordia came out of a media timeout forcing a turnover with 11 minutes left and converted that into 2 points thanks to Geoff Gerlach and then a fade away jumper from Gerlach improved the Eagles to 53-48 making it the closest deficit the Eagles had seen since the 1st half. Trevone Williams hit a 3-pointer with just over 7 minutes left increasing the lead to 64-51. Mike Mellinger hit a 3 with 27 seconds left making the score 79-70 but the Eagles were unable to overcome the Lancer lead and lost 70-81.

What it Means:  A small setback for the Eagles, they have the opportunity to clinch the PacWest Championships outright with a win on Friday night.

Up Next:  The chance comes against Azusa Pacific on the road at 7:30 pm on Friday.
