The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles fell to Azusa Pacific on the road Friday night, 74-83.
By the Numbers: JT Roach had six threes for CUI and led with 26 points. Justin Davis took the Eagles on a tear in the second half and almost brought them all the way back, he finished with 18 points. Matt Scott chipped in 12.
The Difference: The loss of Stephen Grosey early hurt CUI, as APU outscored them in the paint 36-28. APU went to the foul line 24 times and made 18, CUI made nine of their 13 attempts.
Critical Plays: The Eagles lost Stephen Grosey early in the game, but JT Roach came in and hit a three and Justin Davis finished a layup and CUI led 21-16 nine minutes in. APU came back to tie at 21 three minutes later. Scott broke the tie a minute later. APU hit a three with 4:23 on the clock to lead 29-28. Case Bruton got it right back with a jumper. APU hit a three late in the half and led 39-32 at the half, as they were paced by six first-half threes. APU built the lead to 13 early in the second half. Roach hit a three to make it 56-44 Cougars with 11 minutes left. Davis nailed a jumper and a steal and scoop and it was, 58-52 with nine minutes left. Then Davis came with a three, 58-55. APU pulled back ahead 65-58. The lead grew back as big as 10. CUI made a push with some threes, but APU prevailed 83-74.
What it Means: CUI falls to 22-5 and 15-4 in the PacWest. If APU wins out they will win the PacWest Championship.
Up Next: Concordia finishes the season next Saturday at 6:30 pm against Dixie State in St. George, UT. CUI must win that game, and have APU drop one of their final three to win the conference.
