Eagles Rally In Last Two Innings To Take Down UC San Diego, 5-0

The Concordia Eagles baseball team defeated the UC San Diego Tritons, 5-0, on the road Friday in the first of a four game series.  The Eagles improve to 4-5 on the season.

The Eagles recorded seven hits on the evening and committed only one error.  Hunter Holland, Luke Van Holten, and Ryan Land each had one RBI.

Starting on the mound for the Eagles tonight was Isaiah Terrazas who pitched through the sixth inning.  Terrazas recorded six strikeouts, which was critical in closing out some early innings with Tritons on base and in scoring position.  Garrett Kraemer relieved Terrazas at the start of the seventh and picked up his first win of the year.

"Overall it was a great game as a team and we grinded in all areas," said starting pitcher Isaiah Terrazas.  "We played loose and didn't panic in situations that may have seemed a little tense.  Our pitchers kept the offense in the game and our offense stepped up in the later innings which allowed us to come out with the win.  Like I said before it was a great game overall and it was fun to be apart of the competition."

The scoring started for the Eagles in the top of the eighth when Hunter Holland hit a ground ball to first base to advance Tino Leite and Ryan Land to second and third.  Luke Hussung was batted in from third on the play to take a 1-0 Eagles lead.  In the top of the ninth, Spencer Nielsen led off with a double down the left field line.  Michael Nava reached on a throwing error after bunting and Nielsen went to third.   The next batter was Hussung who was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Eagles.  Van Holten came to the plate, singled up the middle, and advanced to second on a fielding error in center field.  Hussung, Nava, and Nielsen all scored on the play to extend the Eagles lead 4-0.  Ryan Land was next at bat and drove Van Holten in after hitting a shot to left center.  The Eagles closed out the ninth with a final score of 5-0.

"Tonight was a quality night for our entire team and staff.  We were present every pitch with a positive mindset.  We knew our opponent tonight would be prepared and it would be up to us to play Eagle baseball together for as many pitches the game would allow," said Eagles head coach Joe Turgeon.

"Tonight we were not trying to hard and not worrying about things we couldn't control.  We had fun the right way in the game of baseball."

Concordia's next game is on the road Saturday, February 20th with games two and three of a four game series against UC San Diego.
