The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles won one comfortably and one in extra innings, but finished the day 2-0 at the first day of the Northwest Cup in Happy Valley, OR.
Concordia 10, Northwest Christian 0
By the Numbers: BethAnn McCann improved to 2-0 going five innings allowing just four hits with three K's. Ryann Ferguson homered twice and Charlotte Foster and Amy Eilefson each had a home run. CUI scored 10 runs on nine hits.Â
The Difference:Â The Eagles only left two runners on base on their nine hits and they drew two walks.
Critical Plays: Eilefson hit a two-out, two-run shot in the first and after Hanna Miller and Nicole Chavez singled in the second, Ferguson homered to right. Foster led off the third with a solo bomb to center. Chavez singled in the fourth and the bases got loaded on a walk and hit batter. Ferguson launched a grand slam to right center.Â
Concordia 3, Saint Martins 2 (9 innings)
By the Numbers: Ferguson homered again and Alyssa Yglesias doubled. Ferguson and Hanna Miller had three hits. CUI used three pitchers but McCann finished strong the last five innings and earned two wins on the day.
The Difference: McCann stranded runners in the seventh and ninth inning for the Eagles. After a CUI runner reached on an error in the ninth, Ferguson singled through the right side to drive home the run.
"That was a gutsy performance from BethAnn, she came in tough weather, in a close battle, and grinded out a win," CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal said. Â "Jasmin made a great catch to keep us in the game overall."
Critical Plays: Ferguson homered to lead off the third and another run scored on a sac bunt. SMU loaded the bases in the seventh but Jasmin Dresser made a running basket catch and doubled off the runner at first. After a protest from SMU, the run was ruled to have scored before the second out and the game went to extras.
What it Means:Â Concordia improved to 12-1 on the day.
