Eagles Drop Two At HPU

The Concordia Eagles baseball team dropped both games in a double header in Kaneohe, Hawaii against the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Saturday.  The Eagles lost the first game 10-1 and also dropped the second 9-4.

In the first game, the Eagles recorded five hits and one error, but were unable to bring in any runs.

Pitching through the sixth was Morgan Brannock who gave up six hits and four runs.  He recorded one strikeout and was charged with the loss bringing his record to 1-3.
Joe Ehlert came in to pitch the seventh inning and gave up five hits on six runs while recording one strikeout.  Dallas Draviczki relieved Ehlert in the eighth but walked three batters.  John Bornhop came in and finished the inning while allowing no runs.

The Sharks scored one in the first and then scored three more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth the Eagles looked to get on the board when Nick Daley singled through the right side and Chad Whiteaker advanced to third after a fielding error by the Sharks with no outs.  In the following at bat, Luke Hussung struck out swinging and Daley was thrown out stealing second.  Kellen Richards then flied out to right field to end the inning, leaving Whiteaker on third.

In the top of the seventh the Eagles couldn't do much offensively and went three batters up three batters down.  The Sharks led 4-0 to start the bottom of the seventh and the Eagles looked to close out the inning unscathed until Steven Camberos was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.  Sharks infielder Nolan Barraza tripled down the right field line to bring in three runs.  The Sharks went on to score three more after that, which gave them a 10-0 advantage heading into the eighth.

The Eagles scored in the ninth after a fielding error by the Sharks shortstop to get on the board, but were unable to overcome the nine run deficit.

The Eagles struggled to advance runners home from scoring position and grounded into four double plays and dropped the first outing 10-1.

In the second game, Concordia found themselves down early.  The Eagles recorded four runs, eight hits, and three errors.
On the mound, John Bornhop started things off for the Eagles.  He struck out two batters, allowed seven hits, and gave up six runs.  Bornhop recorded his first loss of the season, falling to 0-1.  Garrett Kraemer relieved Bornhop during the third and pitched through the fourth.  He gave up three runs on three hits.  Collin Orellana pitched the fifth inning and allowed one hit; Spencer Moran pitched the sixth to finish things up for the evening.

The Eagles found themselves down 9-0 to start the fifth.  After a leadoff single up the middle by Joey Thompson followed by another single a few batter later by Ryan Land, the Eagles had runners in scoring position with Hunter Holland coming to the plate.  Holland singled to load the bases for Spencer Nielsen, who was hit by a pitch to score the Eagles first run.  Chad Whiteaker doubled down the left field line, which was good for two RBI's to close the HPU lead, 9-3.  Nick Daley grounded out to shortstop but was able to drive in Nielsen to score the fourth run of the inning for Concordia.

The Eagles were unable to rally in the final two innings and lost to the Sharks 9-4.

"Today was an uncharacteristic day for our team defensively.  We have really played 'plus plus' defense all year.  All the credit goes to HPU and their staff for the series they played," said Eagles head coach Joe Turgeon.

Following the two losses, the Eagles overall record falls to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the PacWest.

"We are still trying to find our identity as a team.  This ship will continue to move forward and we'll fight our tails off to play baseball to the best of our ability."

The next stop for the Eagles is a double header on Tuesday, March 1st at 6 pm and 9 pm HST in a nine inning double header.
