The Eagles Baseball team played a double header Friday night at Hawaii Pacific to open up PacWest Conference play for the season. The Eagles dropped the first game, 5-3, and won the second, 7-5.
In game one,
Isaiah Terrazas started on the mound for the Eagles and pitched through six innings. Terrazas struck out four batters and gave up five runs on 10 hits.Â
Garrett Kraemer relieved Terrazas in the seventh and recorded a strikeout while giving up only one hit. Terrazas recorded his first loss of the season as his record drops to 1-1.
The Eagles hit well, putting six hits in play.Â
Hunter Holland,
Luke Hussung, and Tine Leite each had an RBI. There were no errors recorded by either team.
The game had remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when HPU jumped out to a two run lead. In the top of the fourth,
Nick Daley's single to shortstop brought in
Luke Hussung to get the Eagles on the board and cut the lead in half; however, the Sharks responded in the bottom of the fourth with a run to retake a two run advantage, 3-1. The Eagles scored two runs in the fifth when the bases were loaded and after
Hunter Holland was hit by a pitch followed by a ball put in play by
Luke Hussung to bring in
Luke Van Holten and Tine Leite.Â
The game was knotted up 3-3 until HPU's Austin Inabata homered to left field to give HPU the lead for the final time, 5-3. The Eagles wouldn't score the rest of the game.
In the second outing, the Eagles put up 12 hits and recorded two errors. At starting pitcher was
Jose Cardona who stayed on through the fourth. He recorded six strikeouts and gave up three runs on two hits.Â
Nick Boyett relieved Cardona to start the fifth and struck out four batters and gave up two runs on four hits. Boyett picked up his second win of the season, improving his record to 2-1.
The Eagles dominated the first five innings on the scoreboard putting up two runs in the first. Spencer
Nielsen doubled to left center to bring in
Hunter Holland and
Chad Whiteaker also doubled to bring in Nielsen to take a 2-0 lead. In the third,
Spencer Nielsen sacrificed flied to left field to bring in
Luke Van Holten.Â
In the fourth
Tino Leite doubled down the left field line to score
Nick Daley and take an Eagles 4-0 lead. In the fifth,
Luke Hussung walked and
Chad Whiteaker was able to score after a passed ball, extending the lead to 5-0. The Sharks responded in the fifth, after bringing in a run from a wild pitch by
Nick Boyett. A Sharks singled allowed two runs to come around after the fifth the Eagles led 5-3. In the sixth inning, HPU scored two more runs to knot the game at five, but the Eagles scored in the seventh on a sac fly by
Luke Hussung and again in the eighth on a bunt by
Hunter Holland to take the lead, 7-5. The Eagles closed out the rest of the game and won game two.
"As a staff we were pleased with the effort and competitiveness from the entire team," said Eagles head coach
Joe Turgeon. "We are in a beautiful place here in Hawaii but with that comes distractions. The team was able to eliminate those and just play baseball. We dealt with a ton of adversity and never wavered from those moments. That tells me we found a way to compete more often against the baseball instead of thinking or worrying about stuff we cannot control."
Following the two games the Eagles changes to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the PacWest. The Eagles play HPU on Saturday, February 27
th in Kaneohe at 4 pm PST.
