The Rundown:Â The Concordia Eagles played their home opener doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona and won the first but dropped the second to improve their record to 1-3.
By the Numbers: Jared James singled in the top of the seventh for Cal Poly Pomona to bat in the go ahead run in the first game. CPP scored twice in the ninth when Chris Stratton singled up the middle to bat Nicholas Bruno in to extend their lead. Shortly after, Jared James singled to the right side to bring in Chris Stratton to make the lead 3-0. In the bottom on the ninth, the Eagles were able to get their first two batters on base and Dane Vande Guchte doubles to right field to score two runs and cut the CPP lead to 3-2. Brett Barker stepped to the plate with two outs and the tying run on second and ended the game with a walk off home run to right center field to secure the victory for the Eagles, 4-2. Nick Boyett entered to relieve Spencer Moran and Boyett picked up the win, improving his record to 1-1 on the season.
In the second game, the Broncos were off to an early 1-0 lead after loading the bases with three walks and a sacrifice fly by Caleb Romo to bring in Chris Stratton. In the bottom of the first Dane Vande Gutche was brought in by Hunter Holland after he singled to left field to even the score 1-1. The Broncos scored relentlessly early in the game to take a 10-1 advantage. The Broncos Collin Orellana records his first loss of the season on the mound.
The Difference:Â The Eagles recorded five errors in the first game and zero in the second game.
Critical Plays: Tino Leite helped the Eagles out of a jam with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth when he successfully converted a double play to end the inning. In the bottom on the ninth, third baseman, Nicholas Bruno, dropped a high foul ball with one out to keep the Eagles spirits high.
What it Means:Â The Eagles record improves to 1-3 overall.
