The Concordia Eagles played a double-header against Fresno Pacific on Saturday at Eagles Field. They lost the first game 8-2 and the second, 3-1.
In the first game, the Eagles scored two runs, had seven hits, and two errors.
Jose Cardona started on the mound for the Eagles. He allowed four runs, one of which was earned, and three hits.
Spencer Moran relieved him in the fourth. Moran allowed five hits and recorded two strikeouts while giving up three runs.
Joe Ehlert came in to pitch in the ninth and gave up one run on multiple wild pitches.
The Eagles allowed the Sunbirds to score the first run of the game in the first after a fielding error by second baseman,
Tino Leite. The Sunbirds led 1-0.
In the second, Fresno Pacific scored again after a double by Tristen Alvarez to extend the Sunbird lead 2-0.
In the fourth the Sunbirds scored after a sac fly to center field to bring in Zac Smit and make the score 3-0. Cardona threw two wild pitches in the fifth and walked a batter to force the fourth Sunbird run to score.
Joey Gallegos tripled in the sixth to bring in two more runs and the Sunbirds scored one more to make the score 7-0.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Tino Leite singled through the right side to score Spencer Neilsen and then
Brett Barker doubled to right center to drive in Leite to put the Eagles on the board and close the gap, 7-2.
The Sunbirds scored once more in the ninth and won the game 8-2.
In the second game, the Eagles scored one run, had four hits, and four errors.
Pitching midway through the fifth
Morgan Brannock, who allowed four hits, three runs (two earned), and recorded one strikeout. Brannock recorded the loss and his record fell to 0-2.
Garrett Kraemer came in with a runner on second and a two run deficit.
The Eagles took an early lead in the first after
Brett Barker hit a shot to left center to drive in
Ryan Land. The
Eagles led 1-0.
The Eagles held off a scoring threat in the fourth when FPU had runners on first and second with no outs. Ryan
Land caught two fly balls consecutively and was able to hold Derek Arkelian at third to eliminate the scoring threat.
The inning ended with a pop up to
John Bornhop at first base and the Eagles stranded two FPU base runners.
In the fifth inning, the Sunbirds took advantage of an Eagles error and were able to put the ball in play to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead over the Eagles.
The Eagles were unable to regain the lead in the seventh and lost 3-1.
"After a two week span in which our team finished a 16 game stretch, the fight and desire was strong.
Collin Orellana pitched a quality game for us in our extra inning battle with the Sunbirds," said Eagles assistant coach
Matt Fahey.
"He gave our offense a chance to scrap back in the game."
Following the day, the Eagles are now 12-16 overall and 8-8 in the PacWest.
"Joe Thompson came up clutch for our team after catching a hard fought game.
"We will regroup and get back to practice this week and make the necessary adjustment to our game and get better," said Fahey.
The Concordia Eagles will be back in action on Friday, March 18
th at 3 pm to take on Academy of Art on Eagles Field.
