Eagles Sweep CBU, Take Season Series

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles earned the sweep of Cal Baptist at home on Saturday, 2-0 and 4-2 at Eagles Field.

Concordia 2, Cal Baptist 0

By the Numbers:  Ryann Ferguson doubled and Charlotte Foster and Hanna Miller singled.

The Difference:  Grayson Harvey threw the complete-game shutout with eight K's and only two hits allowed.  Ferguson's double was the RBI variety for the first run of the game.

Critical Plays:  Concordia walked and put a runner on second in the first, but could not come through with a hit.  CBU loaded them in the second but Harvey forced a strikeout and flyout to escape.  Hanna Miller singled to start the second and was sacrificed to second base.  After Lauren Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to start the third, Ryann Ferguson doubled to left to bring her all the way around.  A fielder's choice made it 2-0 Eagles.  A groundball double play ended the inning.  CBU got two aboard in the fifth, but Harvey forced a couple flyouts.  Harvey put it in gear from there and CBU did not threaten again.

Concordia 4, Cal Baptist 2

By the Numbers:  Ferguson hit two more doubles and Amy Eilefson hit what turned out to be the go-ahead home run in the fifth.

The Difference:  After a tough first three batters, BethAnn McCann took control on the mound for CUI, going six and a third strong scattering 10 hits and two runs with seven K's.  With trouble in the seventh, Harvey came in to strike two out and earn her first save.

Critical Plays:  CBU started the game with three straight hits for a 1-0 lead in the first, but McCann slowed the bleeding from there and escaped.  Foster singled in the bottom and stole second.  CUI was not able to drive any in.  Jasmin Dresser was hit by a pitch to start the second and was sacrificed to second, and Nicole Chavez dropped one into right field to tie the game.  Ferguson then smoked a double into the right center gap to plate Chavez from first.  McCann worked around two singles in the third.  CUI got a runner on second in the third on an error, and CUI singled but the runner was thrown out at home from left field.  Ferguson led off the fifth with a double to center.  With two outs, Eilefson homered into the American flag in left center.  CBU loaded the bases with two out in the sixth, but McCann forced a pop out to catcher to escape.  Two singles and a double from CBU scored one in the seventh, but Harvey came in and struck out the side.

What it Means:  Concordia improves to 25-4 and 8-2 in the PacWest, and swept CBU for the first time since 2003.  Concordia takes the season series from CBU, three games to four, the first time since 2003.

Up Next:  The Eagles continue a long homestand with nonconference action on Wednesday against Arizona Christian at 2 pm.
