Eagles Run-Rule Then Tripped Up By Firestorm

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles split at home with Arizona Christian on Wednesday, 8-0 and 3-5.

Concordia 8, Arizona Christian 0 6 innings

By the Numbers:  Ryann Ferguson had two doubles and a single, and Alyssa Yglesias and Charlotte Foster each added two hits.  Grayson Harvey pitched five innings of one-hit ball and improved to 15-1, and BethAnn McCann finished a perfect sixth.

The Difference:  The Eagles outhit ACU 11-1.

Critical Plays:  The Eagles loaded the bases with hits from Ferguson and Alyssa Yglesias in the first and scored two runs on a hit batter and sac fly.  CUI was quiet until the fourth when Jasmin Dresser was thrown out at home tagging up to keep the score 2-0.  Harvey worked around two errors with a groundout in the fifth.  Ferguson doubled to left center with one out in the fifth and Yglesias bunted a single to move her over.  Charlotte Foster singled off the wall to drive in one and Amy Eilefson followed with a double down to drive in one more.  A single from Hanna Miller scored another and an error allowed one right behind her.  CUI tacked on two more in the sixth to end the game.

Concordia 3, Arizona Christian 5

By the Numbers:  Ferguson doubled again and had three hits.  Yglesias came off the bench for two hits.  Susana Gurney took the loss allowing five runs on six hits in four and one-third innings.

The Difference:  The Firestorm took advantage of some illegal pitches in the third and tacked on two more with a home run in the fifth, and their pitching platoon did just enough to keep CUI off balance.

Critical Plays:  ACU put runners on the corners in the second, but Gurney escaped with a groundout.  ACU took advantage of some illegal pitches and singles to score three runs in the third.  Hannah Howell laid a bunt single in the bottom half and Ferguson followed with a double to right center.  One run scored on a sac fly from Foster.  ACU homered in the fifth to get that run back.  A double and single made it 5-1 Firestorm.  Yglesias, Ferguson, and Foster tacked together three singles in the bottom half, and a fielder's choice and error made it 5-3.  Two walks and a single from Yglesias loaded them for CUI in the sixth, but they could not do any damage.  CUI was quiet in the seventh.

What it Means:  Concordia goes to 26-5 on the year.

Up Next:  It's back to PacWest play at home for CUI on Saturday as they host Azusa Pacific at 12 pm for a doubleheader.
