The Concordia Eagles defeated the Academy of Art Urban Knights, 11-4, in the first game and 2-1 in the second game in extra innings, 2-1 on Saturday at Eagles Field. The Eagles improve their record to 15-16 overall and 11-8 in the PacWest.
In the first game, he Eagles scored eleven runs on fourteen hits, and committed one error in the outing.
At starting pitcher for the Eagles was
Collin Orellana. He pitched through the eighth and allowed two runs, both earned, on seven hits and struck out one batter. Orellana was granted the win and he record now stands at 1-0.
Joe Ehlert pitched the ninth and closed the game for the Eagles.
The Urban Knights were out to an early lead when Tyler Strawn singled to right field to drive in Erick Luna.
The Knights led 1-0 until
John Bornhop drove in
Tino Leite on a single to right field to even the score in the bottom of the first.
Spencer Nielsen doubled to left center with two outs and
John Bornhop and
Brett Barker on first and second. Barker scored and Nielsen was thrown out at third before Bornhop came across home. The inning ended with the Eagles ahead, 2-1.
In the fifth,
Luke Hussung homered to left center to extend the Eagles lead, 3-1.
Brett Barker hit a leadoff double down the right field line to start the Eagles in the sixth.
John Bornhop hit a line drive up the middle and reached first and advanced Barker to third.
Hunter Holland hit a high fly ball to left field which was good for a single. Barker scored and the Eagles had a 4-1 advantage.
Spencer Nielsen singled to right field to load the bases with no outs.
Joey Thompson came to bat with one out and hit a sacrifice fly to right center to score
Hunter Holland.
Luke Hussung, with runners on first and third, hit a laser to left center off the ball to score
Nick Daley and
Spencer Nielsen. The Urban Knights made a pitching change and brought in Cody Ball, who closed out the inning.
The Eagles led 7-1 until
John Bornhop hit a two run home run to left center in the seventh followed by another two run homer to left by
Spencer Nielsen. The Eagles led 11-1.
In the eighth the Urban Knights were able to get three runs across which cut the lead to 11-4, but the Eagles put the game away and came out with an 11-4 victory.
The second game took ten innings to determine a winner. The Eagles scored one run on five hits. They committed two errors and won the game,
Morgan Brannock started on the mound for the Eagles and pitched through the fourth and was replaced by
Garrett Kraemer in the fifth. Brannock allowed seven hits, one run and struck out one batter. Kraemer allowed three hits, no runs, and struck out two batters. In the seventh,
Nick Boyett relieved Kraemer with one out and a runner on second. He allowed two hits, no runs, and recorded two strikeouts. Boyett gained his fourth win of the season, which now stands at 4-2.
Academy of Art scored in the second after Cameron Jones reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by
Spencer Nielsen. Payton Milone singled through the right side and scored Jones to take a 1-0 advantage over the Eagles.
The Eagles threatened to score in the fifth when
Tino Leite hit a leadoff single to shortstop followed by
Brett Barker singling to right field. Leite went to third on the play and
John Bornhop singled up the middle to bring in Leite for the tying run.
Hunter Holland sac bunted to move Bornhop and Barker to second and third.
Nick Daley was up with two outs and runners on second and third and walked to load the bases for
Luke Van Holten. Van Holten popped up to second and ended the inning tied, 1-1.
The game remained tied until the eleventh when Kellen Richard hit a leadoff stand up double and subsequently intentionally walked
Joey Thompson.
Luke Hussung bunted to the pitcher and
Kellen Richards reached third on a throwing error and advanced home to score the winning run.
The Eagles won, 2-1.
Following the wins, the Eagles improve their record to 15-16 overall and 11-8 in the PacWest.
The Eagles will play the last game of the series on Sunday, March 19
th starting a 1 pm on Eagles Field.
