The Rundown: The Eagles split with first-place Hawaii at Hilo on Wednesday, 4-5 and then 8-0 in 5 innings at Eagles Field.
Concordia 4, Hawaii at Hilo 5
By the Numbers: Lauren Rodriguez homered for CUI, driving in three runs in the second inning. Alyssa Yglesias picked up two hits. Grayson Harvey ran into trouble with walks, walking seven and giving up five earned. BethAnn McCann pitched two scoreless innings.
The Difference:Â Hilo was able to work around their four errors by taking full advantage of the walks.
Critical Plays: Singles from Alyssa Yglesias and Eilefson in the first gave CUI a threat, and a double steal put them both in scoring position. A flyout kept the Eagles off the board. In the second, an error, hit batter, and sac bunt put them right back at second and third for CUI. Rodriguez homered to left to plate all three. A two-run shot from the Vulcans in the top of the fourth made it close again. UHH loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, and a walk tied the game. The Eagles took advantage of two errors to regain the 4-3 edge in the bottom half. Three walks, a wild pitch, and sac fly gave the lead back to UHH in the sixth. CUI was not able to scratch another one across to tie.
Concordia 8, Hawaii at Hilo 0
By the Numbers:Â Ryann Ferguson and Nicole Chavez each homered, and Ferguson and Dominique Espinoza had two hits each.
The Difference:Â BethAnn McCann held the Vulcans to two hits and Ferguson's three-run shot ignited the offense for nine hits, only leaving four on base.
Critical Plays: Megan Feuerstein and Hannah Howell singled to give CUI its first threat in the third, and Ferguson followed with a line shot home run over the left center fence. McCann controlled and one-hit UHH through four innings. Chavez led off the fourth with a solo shot to left field. Two errors allowed two more on base and Dominique Espinoza singled up the middle to score one more. Yglesias drove one more in and an error made it 7-0. Ferguson singled in the fifth and scored on single from Espinoza to end the game 8-0.
What it Means:Â The Eagles broke their four-game skid, their first since 2011, and went to 27-8 and 9-5 in the PacWest.
