The Concordia Eagles baseball team played a double header in San Diego against the Point Loma Sea Lions Friday. The Eagles took game won by a score of 9-0 and game two 8-5 in extra innings.
On the mound in game one was
Brett Barker through eight innings. He allowed four hits, no runs, and recorded eight strikeouts. Relieving Barker and closing out the ninth was
Dallas Draviczki. Barkers record improves to 3-2 on the season.
The Eagles took advantage of a throwing error by the Sea Lions in the second inning to score the game's first run. In the third,
Chad Whiteaker hit a 2 RBI single to center field to bring home
Hunter Holland and
Ryan Land, giving the Eagles a 3-0 edge.
It wasn't until the sixth that the lead was extended after
Luke Hussung hit a single to left field and brought
Spencer Nielsen home from third. Â In the next at bat,
Ryan Land reached after a fielding error on Sea Lions second baseman, allowing
Tino Leite to score.
The Eagles led 6-0 heading into the ninth and were able to bring across three more runs before winning by a score of 9-0.
"
Brett Barker was lights out today. He had great command of all four of his pitches and continued to be competitive throughout the game. Point Loma's pitching has been good this year but we were able to find a way to work them offensively in such a difficult offensive park. Â
When we put the ball in play we hit it on the line or on the ground and forced them to play defense," said Eagles head coach
Joe Turgeon.
In game two, The Eagles won 8-5 after scoring three runs in extra innings to clinch the victory.
Morgan Brannock started on the mound and pitched four innings. He allowed three [earned] runs, three hits, and recorded one strikeout. Garret Kraemer entered in the fifth and pitched through the end of the sixth. He allowed one run on three hits and had two strikeouts.Â
Nick Boyett pitched starting in the seventh through the rest of the game and recorded the win (5-2). He allowed one run.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Brett Barker scored after a throwing error by the Sea Lions.Â
In the third,
Spencer Nielsen brought
Brett Barker to score for the second time after an RBI single to center field. The Eagles led 2-0.
The Sea Lions took the lead in the third following a double to right field and a sac fly.Â
CUI evened the game in the fifth at three, until Point Loma's Ryan Garcia homered to center field to put the Sea Lions ahead, 4-3.
The led went back and forth between the sixth and the seventh inning.Â
Spencer Nielsen hit a home run to left field to take a 5-4 lead but Point Loma answered with an RBI single from Ryan Garcia which tied the game at five and forced extra innings.
The Eagles were able to score the go ahead run in the ninth when
Tino Leite was walked with the bases loaded. A few batters later,
Joey Thompson singled to center field and drove in Nielsen and Barker to put the Eagles up 8-5.
Concordia held on for the 8-5 victory in the ninth to give the Eagles two wins on the afternoon and finish the series with Point Loma, 3-1.
"This game can be a difficult game because there are a lot of individual stats; ultimately it comes down to what each guy can do to help the team be successful," said Turgeon.The Eagles overall record now stands at 19-17 and 15-9 in the PacWest. Â They have won seven of their last eight games.

e're starting to play for each other day in and day out. Â Today wasn't a perfect day for us but our guys are battle tested; they fought together and it took everyone single guy to win today, said Eagles head coach
Joe Turgeon.
"I'm extremely proud of these guys because of where we've been this season compared to where we are now. Â
It's been typical of our teams in the past to play better as the season has gone on and we plan to keep the momentum and finish the season strong."Â
