Eagles Earn Split At #9 Cal Baptist

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles split with Cal Baptist, 1-3 and 5-4 in Riverside, CA on Saturday afternoon.  The teams had not played since 2011 and it was CUI's first win over the Lancers since 2010.

Concordia 1 Cal Baptist 3

By the Numbers:  Megan Feuerstein had two hits, including a double, and seven other Eagles recorded singles.  Grayson Harvey suffered her first lost for CUI (11-1), allowing three runs on six hits with a season-high nine K's.

The Difference:  The Eagles left 10 runners on base while CBU only stranded two, and were unable to cash in on their nine hits.

Critical Plays:  CUI left the bases loaded in the first and two more in the second.  The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when two singles, a triple, and sac fly led to all three Lancer runs.  Feuerstein doubled to open the seventh and scored after Ryann Ferguson and Alyssa Yglesias singled.  Three straight outs doused the Eagle comeback.

Concordia 5, Cal Baptist 4

By the Numbers:  Ferguson, Hanna Miller, and Jasmin Dresser all doubled, and Ferguson, Charlotte Foster, and Hannah Howell all recorded two hits.  Howell added three RBI and BethAnn McCann and Harvey combined to get the win, with Harvey earning the decision.

The Difference:  Even though CUI was outhit 10-9, they rallied for four runs in the last two innings to secure the win.

Critical Plays:  Miller doubled to open the second and the run scored on a Howell single.  CBU got two in the third and the game was scoreless into the sixth.  Amy Eilefson singled with one out in the sixth, and after an error, Dresser doubled to center to score one.  Howell then singled through the right side to plate two more.  CBU got two more in the sixth to tie the game.  Ferguson doubled to center to start the seventh, and after she was sacrificed, scored on Foster's single up the middle.

"I am proud of our pitchers, they kept us in both games today," CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal said.  "We came up with a couple timely hits and we have to play better defense moving forward, but I am proud of our effort today."

What it Means:  The Eagles ended the day 22-3 and 6-2 in the PacWest.

Up Next:  Concordia begins a long home stand with a doubleheader against Doane on Tuesday at 2 pm.
