The Concordia Eagles started a four game series against Holy Names on Sunday, March 6
th with a double header at home. The Eagles won the first game, 4-3, and lost the second, 4-2. The Eagles record is now 9-13 overall and 5-5 in the PacWest.
In the first game, the Eagles recorded four runs on nine hits and only one error. The Eagles won 4-3 after a walk off single to right field by
John Bornhop.
At starting pitcher was
Jose Cardona who stayed through the seventh and started the eighth. He gave up two hits and one run, while recording five strikeouts.
Garrett Kraemer relieved Cardona in the eighth and entered with one out with runners on first and second. Kraemer pitched through the rest of the game and gave up three hits on one run while recording one strikeout. He also recorded the win, which improves his record to 2-0.
In the second inning, the Eagles were able to load the bases when
Hunter Holland laid down a bunt on the first base line that stayed fair, but the Eagles were unable to bring anyone home and stranded three runners.
The scoring started for both teams in the sixth. The Hawks scored after Drew Gnos hit a shot to center field which was good for a double and drove in Ryan Paniagua to take a 1-0 Hawks lead.
The Eagles tied the game, 1-1, after
Hunter Holland hit a slow ground ball to third base, allowing
Chad Whiteaker to advance home before the throw was made home.
In the top of the eighth,
Garrett Kraemer relieved Cardona with runners on first and second and one out. Kraemer walked Caleb Parker; Chris Gnos for the Hawks came to the plate and hit a weak grounder in front of the
Luke Van Holten with the bases loaded to score the go ahead run. The Eagles got themselves out of the jam and ended the inning behind 2-1.
Brett Barker hit a double to center field to start the bottom of the eighth and give the Eagles a chance to tie the game.
Chad Whiteaker and
John Bornhop were both put out to bring
Hunter Holland to the plate with two outs and Barker on second. Holland hit a ground ball to the shortstop who bobbled the ball, which allowed Barker to score from second.
Headed into the ninth, the score was tied 2-2. Hawks pitcher Trent Carrier pinched hit for the DH and doubled to right field to drive in the go head run for the Hawks. The Eagles entered the bottom of the ninth down 3-2.
Brett Barker was intentionally walked in the ninth to load the bases for the Eagles with one out.
Chad Whiteaker was up to bat with the bases loaded and walked to bring in the tying run.
John Bornhop then hit a walk off double to right field to score the winning run for the Eagles
The Eagles won 4-3.
In game two, the Eagles had two runs, five hits, and one error. The Eagles lost 4-2
Morgan Brannock started on the mound for the Eagles. He gave up one run on four hits and struck out two batters.
Nick Boyett came in to relieve Brannock with no outs in the fourth with runners on first and second. Boyett allowed six hits on three runs and recorded the loss, making his record drop to 3-2.
Holy Names jumped out to a quick lead in the first when Dustin Zeisler was batted in after a single. They led 1-0 after the first.
The Eagles battled back and evened the score after
Ryan Land singled through the right side to bring in
Joey Thompson.
The score was still 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Brannock walked a batter to put runners on first and second with no outs. Boyett came in and was able to close out the inning undamaged and the score remained 1-1.
In the fifth,
Tino Leite doubled down the left field line to bring the go ahead run home for the Eagles (
Joey Thompson) and headed into the sixth up 2-1.
Dustin Zeisler of the Hawks singled through the left side to bring in Kyle Scott for the tying run in the sixth. The game was tied 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Hawks scored took the lead after back-to-back doubles and then scored another run after a throwing error on Eagles shortstop
Michael Nava.
The Eagles were unable to put any runs on the board in the ninth and lost, 4-2.
The Eagles record is now 9-13 overall and 5-5 in the PacWest.
The Eagles will take on Holy Names again on Monday, March 7
th at 2 pm on Eagles Field in a single-game matchup. If the game is postponed due to inclement weather, a double-header will be played on Tuesday, March 8
th at 11 am.
