Eagles Struggle Against Toros

The Concordia Eagles played a single game in Irvine on Tuesday afternoon against the CSU Dominguez Hills Toros.  The Eagles fell to the Toros 19-7.

The Eagles recorded seven runs, seven hits, and one error.

Starting on the mound for the Eagles was Spencer Moran.  He pitched through the third and recorded three strikeouts and allowed four earned runs on seven hits.  Joe Ehlert came in at the start of the fourth and pitched one inning.  Collin Orellana pitched the fifth and allowed four runs on three hits.  He picked up the loss and his record falls to 4-4 on the season.

Jose Cardona pitched in the sixth and pitched to four batters before being replaced by Dallas Draviczki.  Draviczki hit his first two batters and walked the third and was replaced by
Kellen Richards who gave up three runs on three hits.  Garrett Kraemer started the seventh and pitched through the eighth.  John Bornhop pitched the ninth.

In the first inning, the Toros jumped out to a 3-0 lead after putting the ball in play in the outfield and recording four hits.

In the second, Chad Whiteaker hit a leadoff single to left field to start things off, followed by singles from John Bornhop and Spencer Nielsen  to load the bases for Tino Leite with no outs.  Leite and Luke Van Holten walked to bring home the first two runs for the Eagles and make the score 3-2.

Ryan Land lined one to center field and recorded 2 RBIs to bring home Leite and Bornhop and take a 4-3 lead over the Toros.

CSU Dominguez Hills tied the game at four in the third inning after a ball hit to the shortstop drove in Parker Hokuf.

The game was tied until Orellana walked a few batters in the fifth to load the bases for the Toros with two outs when Lester Salcedo singled through the right side to bring home two runs.  Brandon Polizzi tripled to right center to score two more for the Toros and they led the Eagles 8-4 headed to the bottom of the fifth.

Brett Barker hammered one to right field for a two run homer to bring the Eagles to within two runs, 8-6, in the bottom of the fifth.

Jose Cardona walked the first three batters of the sixth to load the bases with no outs.  Johnny Palmer hit a 2 RBI single to left field to extend the Toro lead, 10-6.  Draviczki entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs and hit his first two batters and walked the third and the Toros jumped out to a 13-6 lead.

Brady Conlan doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs. And a three run homer to right center made the score 19-6 before the Eagles were able to escape the sixth inning.

The Eagles and Toros both brought across another run in the seventh and the ninth but the Eagles couldn't make up the deficit and lost 20-7.

"Today was a tought one to swallow.  As a team, we didn't compete well enough.  This group has competed all year long so that too was dissapointing.  I will go back to the drawing board to find ways to motivate this team to compete every moment, every pitch, every day, and every game," said Eagles head coach Joe Turgeon.

The Eagles record falls to 20-22 on the season and remains 16-12 in the PacWest.

CUI's next matchup is a four game series on the road against Azusa Pacific starting on Wednesday, April 20th, at Angel Stadium at 3:30 pm.
