The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles picked up a road sweep by beating Academy of Art 3-1 and 12-1 in 5 innings in Brisbane, CA on Saturday.
Concordia 3, Academy of Art 1
By the Numbers: Hannah Howell homered in the fifth for a two-run lead. Alyssa Yglesias and Amy Eilefson each added two hits. Grayson Harvey led the charge, allowing just four hits and one run to improve to 18-4 on the year.
The Difference:Â The Eagles outhit AAU 8-4 and scored an insurance run in the seventh.
Critical Plays: Eilefson singled to start the fifth and scored on Howell's shot to left center. CUI left a runner on third to end the inning, but Lauren Rodriguez singled with one out in the seventh. After Megan Feuerstein singled, Yglesias drove in the third run with a single to third base. AUU loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and scored on an RBI single. Harvey forced a popout to secure the win.
Concordia 12, Academy of Art 1
By the Numbers: Charlotte Foster went deep and Feuerstein doubled. Feuerstein led with three hits and five RBI, and Foster had two hits and three RBI. BethAnn McCann worked the first three innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits for the win and Susuan Gurney finished allowing just two hits.
The Difference:Â The Eagles plated 10 runs through the first three innings to blow this one open.
Critical Plays: AAU took advantage of a leadoff error to score in the first, but a hit batter and single from Rodriguez led to a two-run single by Feuerstein. Foster hit a solo shot in the third, and after a number of walks and hit batters, Feuerstein doubled to left center to plate three more. Two more runs scored on a wild pitch and Foster singled to make it 10-0 Eagles. CUI tacked on two more in the fifth to make it 12-1.
"I was pleased with our effort today as Hannah Howell had a big two-run homer in game one," CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal said. "We had a good approach at bat all day and got contributions from throughout the lineup. We hope to finish strong tomorrow."
What it Means: CUI ends the day 34-9 and 15-5 in the PacWest.
