Tale Of Two Games Equals Sweep For Eagles

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles swept BYU-Hawaii on Friday in two very different games, 7-4 in eight innings and 8-0 in six innings at Eagles Field.

Concordia 7 BYU-Hawaii 4 8 innings

By the Numbers:  Charlotte Foster hit two home runs, including the three-run walkoff in the eighth to keep her lead on the team.  She also doubled and four other Eagles had singles.  Susana Gurney battled in the circle scattering seven hits and four runs, three earned, with five K's to improve to 7-3.

The Difference:  The Eagles used the BYU-Hawaii errors to extend the game in the seventh and given the chance Foster hit the walkoff winner in the next frame.

Critical Plays:  After Alyssa Yglesias singled in the first, Foster wrapped one around the left field foul pole for the 2-0 lead.  Three singles from the Seasiders pushed one across in the second.  The Eagles had two singles in the fourth, but left them stranded.  BYUH used an error, walk, single, and some nifty base running to plate three runs in the fifth to grab the 4-2 lead.  CUI led off the bottom with a walk and Foster laced a double down the line.  A sac fly from Amy Eilefson got the Eagles within one.  Heather Nonora walked in the sixth and took third on an infield single from Ryann Ferguson with some quick base running, but a groundout kept CUI off the board.  A CUI runner reached on an error to start the seventh, and a two-out steal put a runner in scoring position.  Another error tied the game at four with two outs.  The Eagles reached and advanced to third on two errors in the eighth.  A three-run walkoff from Foster won the game 7-4.

Concordia 8, BYU-Hawaii 0

By the Numbers:  Foster homered again and Dominique Espinoze doubled and had two hits.  Amy Eilefson had three singles and drove in a run.  BethAnn McCann went six innings of three-hit ball in the shutout.

The Difference:  CUI scored in every inning but one as the offense was relentless.

Critical Plays:  Yglesias singled in the first, and after an error, Eilefson drove one home with a single.  Dominique Espinoza doubled after Nicole Chavez singled in the second to put them in scoring position.  A fielder's choice made it 2-0.  And RBI-groundout followed and pushed the score to 3-0.  A steal and throwing error made it 4-0 before the inning ended.  After two walks, Espinoza singled to make it 5-0 in the third.  Ferguson singled to start the fourth and an error put her on third, as she scored on a groundout.  Foster hit her third homer of the day in the next at-bat.  Kaylee Dalgarn singled with one out in the fifth, stole second, but did not score.  Eilefson singled in the sixth, and Megan Feuerstein singled to drive her home to end the game.

What it Means:  The Eagles improved to 38-11 and 19-7 in the conference.
