Eagles Split With Dixie As Rain Clears

The Rundown: After many lightning delays, the first game was played into the bottom of the sixth on Friday, before seeing Concordia finish it Saturday with an 8-5 win over Dixie State in St. George, UT.

Concordia 8, Dixie State 5

By the Numbers:  Hannah Howell and Nicole Chavez both homered, and Megan Feuerstein doubled.  Howell, Chavez, and Alyssa Yglesias all had two hits.  Grayson Harvey went the full seven innings and allowed five hits and five runs, with eight strikeouts.  She improved to 20-6, her first 20-win season.

The Difference:  After a slow start, CUI scored eight runs from innings 3-6 to gain control of the game.

Critical Plays:  DSU homered in the first to lead 1-0 and a double in the second made it 4-0.  CUI scored on two walks and an error in the third.  Alyssa Yglesias got one with a single, and Jasmin Dresser singled to make it 3-4.  Chavez homered to right center to lead off the fourth and after Espinoza singled, Ryann Ferguson singled to center for CUI's first lead, 5-4.  DSU used three singles in the bottom of the fourth to tie at five.  Howell and Chavez hit back-to-back two-out homers in the fifth for a 7-5 edge.  Yglesias singled in the sixth and came around to score on Amy Eilefson's single to left center.  Two walks and an error loaded the bases for DSU in the sixth, but a groundout kept it at zeros and Harvey worked around a single in the seventh.

Concordia 6, Dixie State 9

By the Numbers:  Charlotte Foster tripled and homered, and Amy Eilefson homered for CUI.  Eilefson led with three hits and two RBI, and Yglesias joined Foster with two hits.  BethAnn McCann threw for CUI and ran into trouble allowing an eight-run Trailblazer second inning.

The Difference:  The Eagles fought back valiantly, but could not recover from that second inning.

Critical Plays:  Foster tripled with two out in the first and Eilefson followed with a blast to left field.  McCann stranded two runs in the bottom to keep the 2-0 edge.  Dixie took advantage of three errors and four hits to plate eight in the second.  Ryann Ferguson singled in the third and scored on a bases-loaded walk, but CUI left three on base.  Yglesias singled to open the fifth and Foster followed with a homer to left center.  Another run scored after an error and single from Dominique Espinoza.  Dixie got one back in the fifth and took the 9-6 win.

"It was good to finally finish a game today," CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal said.  "We hit the ball well all day but just made too many mistakes in game two.  I am proud of our effort to keep at it and look forward to finishing our season strong tomorrow."

What it Means:  Concordia moved to 41-12 and 22-8 in the PacWest, and Dixie moved to 35-12 and 23-7.

Up Next: Both teams will wrap their regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at 10 am.
