Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Emily Duran

Tran and Eagle offense takes charge in win over Argonauts

The Eagles flipped the script against Notre Dame De Namur Saturday. Despite losing its first match against the Argonauts in four sets, Concordia Women's Volleyball was the victorious team the second time around (23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-20).

Cindy Tran's play took a toll of the Argonauts. The sophomore boasted a .419 attack percentage with 15 kills and seven block assists. Rachel Flynn had 17 kills with 18 digs on the match with one service ace. Middle blocker Amber Rose continued her streak of defensive dominance with six blocks to accompany an ace and four kills. Madeline Deters ended the match with a double-double. The senior libero tallied 10 assists and 30 digs in just four sets.

Although the Eagles dropped a tightly fought first contest, they came out firing in the second set. Tran and Rose kicked off the matches with two kills and Concordia capitalized on a few Argonaut errors to push a 4-2 run. Notre Dame put together three points, but Concordia's trio of four point runs, one of which was highlighted by three straight aces from setter Logan Grove, gave Concordia a commanding 25-12 win.

In the third set, the Eagles and Argonauts traded the lead until they tied at 13-13 on a Tran Kill. Grove got another ace and Flynn put away a set to take the slim two-point advantage. After allowing a kill from Notre Dame's Bianca Alvarez, Kyra Auten's successful swing and an error forced a timeout. Following the break, the Argonauts picked up speed. They crawled within one of Concordia at 23-22, but two service errors sealed the win for the Eagles.

In the potential match winning set, the Eagles surged to a 5-0 lead. The offensive frenzy fueled the Eagles the remainder of the set. Concordia scored 17 points on kills from six different players while holding Notre Dame to a .094 hitting percentage for the four-set victory. Flynn had eight of her 17 kills in this final game.

The Eagles have now won five straight, and three within only four days. Concordia returns to Irvine and CU Arena Wednesday October 18th for a match up against Point Loma beginning at 7 p.m.
