The top two scoring teams in the PacWest faced off on Wednesday which resulted in the snap of the Eagles' four game win streak, falling to the California Baptist Lancers 2-1.
The match stayed close throughout with the first half ending in a scoreless tie. CBU outshot the Eagles 11-3 but
William Whiddon made two saves in the half keeping the Lancers off the board.
Eric Torres and
Ether Bustos each took a shot in the 11
th minute but were unable to find the net. The CBU keeper saved a
Jose Garfias shot in the 20
th minute keeping the game scoreless.
Cal Baptist got on the board first just five minutes into the second half with a goal from Joey Chica.
Julian Font evened the game in the 59
th minute. He beat the keeper for an open shot after a pass from Garfias.
Whiddon made another save in the goal in the 79
th minute, but he was unable to get a hand on a ball tipped in by the PacWest's leading goal scorer, Aidan Apodaca.
Font took a shot at the last second in an effort to tie the game, but the CBU keeper made a save to seal the win for the Lancers.
Though the Eagles dropped the matchup, they still remain tied with CBU for the top spot in the PacWest with 12 points each.
The Eagles take to the turf again on Saturday afternoon. PacWest play continues as CUI hosts the Chaminade Silverswords at 4 p.m.
