IRVINE, CALIF. — On a warm Saturday at Eagles field, the Concordia Women's Soccer Team (5-4-1, 4-2 PacWest) triumphed over Chaminade University of Hawaii (3-5, 2-3 PacWest) in conference play. Four different Eagles found the back of the net, posting a 4-0 win.
Concordia came out strong, pressing the CUH defense from the beginning. In the 3rd minute, the Eagles found the back of the net in a sequence of passes stemming from a throw-in. McKenna Carrillo threw the ball from the sideline straight to forward Keely Abt. Abt kept possession at her feet and the defender at her back until flicking the ball into the middle of the congested 18 yard box. Megan Hussey got a foot on it, redirecting the ball to bounce in front of Carmany Jones. Jones blasted the shot into the back of the net, putting the Eagles on the board 1-0.
As play continued, Concordia's offense did not let up. Possession was continuously held by CUI in Chaminade's defensive third of the field. The Eagles struck again with a first-of-the-season goal by Hussey. The freshman was among a jumble of players inside the box when a cross came flying in. The ball bounced off a few CUH defenders before it was crushed into the back of the net and the Eagles took a 2-0 lead.
In the 37th minute, Marianna Maldonado scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Receiving a pass on the right side of the field, Maldonado dribbled through defenders and blew a shot by the CUH keeper. Concordia led Chaminade 3-0 at halftime.
Junior Katie Gast rounded off the scoring for the Eagles with a goal in the 68th minute. Cienah Reed took a perfectly placed corner kick from the left side. Gast hit a first touch volley and snuck the ball by the Chaminade keeper.
Concordia held the lead until the whistle, finishing strong with a 4-0 score and another conference win at home.
The Eagles Women's Soccer team returns to the pitch on October 12th against Holy Names University. Kick off is scheduled for 4:30pm.
