SAN MARCOS, CALIF. — The Concordia Men's Basketball team (3-1) defeated Cal State San Marcos (1-1) in the second game of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge tournament with a final score of 103-86. JT Roach racked up 24 total points, sinking five three pointers.
Cal State San Marcos was picked to finish third in the CCAA conference preseason poll, just 25 points behind the Eagles last opponent, Chico State.
Roach began the scoring just 20 seconds into the first half with a three pointer assisted by Tad Dufelmeier. Roach hit two more three pointers in the first three minutes of the game and put Concordia on top, 9-2.
The Eagles attacked San Marcos with multiple layups increasing the score to 21-11. Cameron English dunked the ball with 11 minutes left in the first half after receiving an assist from Dufelmeier.
Roach drained his fourth three point shot of the first half with seven minutes remaining. Following suit, Tyler Lacour hit his first three pointer of the game, assisted by Roach.
A layup by Adam Turner and a jumper Michael Vos-Otin rounded out the first half scoring for the Eagles. The teams headed to halftime with a 23 point lead for Concordia, 48-25.
CUI continued to strike in the second half. One minute into play, Mike Mellinger hit a three pointer assisted by Dufelmeier.
The excess layups and jump shots by different Eagles led the team to 55 total points in the second half. Concordia's offense was relentless in the attack against the Cougars defense until the final buzzer and final score of 103-86.
Roach sunk five of his seven three point attempts. Both Dufelemeier and Geoff Gerlach provided four assists for the Eagles.
Lacour added 17 points to the scoreboard for Concordia, grabbing three offensive rebounds and three defensive rebounds.
"What an outstanding weekend for us playing two of the top CCAA teams. Those were great wins and a huge boost of confidence for us going into the next week" Head Coach Ken Ammann said. "We have a long way to go and need to keep getting better, but it was great to see our guys compete at such a high level after a sluggish start at the Disney Tip Off Classic."

Concordia Men's Basketball returns to the court on November 17th in the Sodexo Tip Off Classic. Tip off is scheduled for 7pm against Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Wash.
