In just the second game of the season, the Eagles showcased their depth and relentlessness in a matchup against the University of Montevallo. Concordia, now 2-0, defeated the Falcons 76-66 in CU Arena on Thursday night.
Montevallo held a slim lead throughout the first, ending the quarter ahead 15-14. Kennedy Fulcher opened up the second with a lay up to take the 16-15 lead and Sopavy Sang hit a jumper for two more. The Falcons fought back to tie the game at 21, but successful shots from Michaela Vanderklugt, Fulcher and a three-pointer from Sang set the Eagles ahead by seven. Montevallo pushed back, but the Eagles held onto the a lead with the layup from Maddie Sulka.
The Eagles entered the third quarter with a five point lead, and worked to earn a double-digit advantage highlighted by three-pointers from Montana Walters and Vanderklugt. Up 56-49 at the start of the fourth, the Falcons bounced back with three consecutive points. Although it appeared the Falcons were building momentum, senior guard Portia Neale propelled the Eagles to close out the game with a dominating fourth. Neale's nine points, including six points from behind the arch, pushed the Eagles to the 76-66 victory.
Vanderklugt posted a double-double with 18 points, 13 total rebounds and three assists. Seng added 17 points, an assist and four rebounds. Fulcher contributed 13 points and three assists to go along with eight rebounds.
