Eagles drop close contest to Cal State Los Angeles

Concordia Women's Basketball took on the California Collegiate Athletic Association's Cal State Los Angeles on Tuesday night and dropped the tightly fought contest 63-62.

In the first period, they battled to a 9-9 tie with 4:49 to play. The Golden Eagles pushed to a five point lead, but a jumper from Portia Neale cut the gap to three. Freshman Michaela Vanderklugt followed with two more points to reduce the lead to one. Cal State Los Angeles ended the period with four straight and a 17-13 lead.

Despite a slow start to the second, the Eagles outscored Cal State Los Angeles 17-15. Down by seven, Riley Friauf sparked the Eagles with a jump shot. Layups from Neale and Friauf held the Golden Eagles to a four point advantage. Neale ended the second with a three-pointer to make the score 30-32.

Concordia continued to trail Cal State Los Angeles in the third, but another shot behind the arch from Neale put the Eagles within three. Concordia entered the fourth five behind their opponents.

Morgan Bryant opened up the final quarter with two successful free throws and layups from Friauf and Vanderklugt got the Eagles within one. Tied at 61-61 with 1:25 to play, Friauf made her second free throw to take the lead. But after an Eagle foul, Cal State Los Angeles' Rikke Fabricius sunk two free throws to seal the one-point lead and win for the Golden Eagles.

Neale led the Eagles with 19 points, three assists and two steals. Friauf was close behind with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals. Sopavy Seng and Vanderklugt chipped in night points apiece.

Concordia faces off Saturday with Cal Poly Pomona at 2 p.m. The Eagles and the Broncos will meet in Pomona, Calif.
