Concordia Women's Basketball played its second-straight game on the road Saturday, battling the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona. The Eagles dropped the game to their opponents, who compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 65-45 in Pomona, Calif.
The first quarter was an even fight for the first half, until with a 6-5 Bronco lead, Cal Poly pushed a 10-4 scoring run to extend the gap to eight.
While the Broncos fought to increase the lead, layups from Zoe Scott-Goes and Sopavy Seng held Cal Poly within nine. Despite the Eagles' efforts, the Broncos built a 29-15 lead with 2:40 to play. Portia Neale hit two free throws and a three-pointer for Concordia, but the Eagles entered the break down 34-20.
Concordia cooked up points from a spread of Eagles to kick off the third on layups from Michaela Vanderklugt, Maddie Sulka and Riley Friauf. Vanderklugt sunk a three with 3:10 to play, but the Eagle offense was unable to slow Cal Poly down.
In the fourth period, the Eagles outscored their opponents 14-12 and saw seven points from Neale, but could not cut down the Bronco lead. Neale paced the Eagles with 12 points, one assist and a steal. Vanderklugt posted 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Next week, the Eagles (2-2) open up conference play against Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii. The PacWest game against the Silverswords (0-1) begins at 8:30 p.m.
