Riding an 11-game win streak, the Concordia Eagles traveled to La Mirada to take on the Biola Eagles on Wednesday night looking to avenge a five-set loss earlier in the season. The two teams again battled to five, and it was again Biola who came out on top 2-3 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 12-15).
Two Eagles,
Rachel Flynn and
Jessica Diederich, had double-doubles. Flynn had 16 kills to go with 14 digs and two blocks. Diederich had 46 assists and 12 digs with two kills.
Cindy Tran led the offense with 18 (.333) kills while contributing eight digs and four blocks.
Amber Rose added 13 kills and led the team with a .360 hitting percentage.
Jaclyn Brown was the fourth Eagle with double-digit kills with 12.
Madeline Deters led the defense with 22 digs.
Tran got the Eagles on the board with the Eagle's first kill of the game. Flynn added a kill, and CUI took a 3-2 lead with a block from Flynn and
Kyra Auten. Biola pulled ahead 9-8 and Concordia responded with back-to-back kills from Rose and Brown. The two teams traded points until two Biola errors put Concordia in front 19-16 and a kill from Brown gave them a 20-16 advantage. Biola would pull ahead to take the first set 25-23.
Rose got things started for CUI in the second set to even the set 1-1. Tran and Rose put up a block to take a 2-1 lead and Flynn added a solo block to extend it. A huge swing from Flynn gave CUI a 5-4 advantage and the back and forth game continued. Concordia went on a six-point run with back-to-back kills from Rose, and kills from Brown and Diederich put CUI up 14-10. The Eagles went on a four-point run as Flynn slammed down a kill to put Concordia up 22-20 and Rose and Tran followed up with a block. Brown added a kill as CUI went up 24-21. A Flynn kill sealed the deal as the Eagles took set two 25-21.
Tran was responsible for the first four Concordia points in the third set, tallying three kills and a solo block. The Eagles scored four-straight with kills from
Hailey Gaines, Rose and Flynn to go ahead 13-8. Tran continued her stellar night with a big block, putting CUI up 16-13. Biola went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-18 lead. Brown went off the block from Deiderich, giving Concordia back the lead at 21-20. Tran and Flynn went back-to-back to extend the lead to 24-22. An impressive dig from Diederich gave way to an assist from Deters and a kill from Flynn, giving Concordia a 25-22 set victory to go up 2-1.
Biola jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth set before Rose got CUI on the board with her 10
th kill of the night. Auten evened the set at 3-3 with her first kill in the game. Biola took a 10-7 lead but a kill from Rose from
Logan Grove and a block by Brown and Rose tied the set 10-10. The Biola offense proved too much to handle as they powered through to take the set 25-19, forcing a fifth set.
Concordia and Biola traded points through the fifth set until 6-6 as two kills gave Biola an 8-6 lead. Two kills from Flynn tied the set at 11-11 but Biola went on a 4-1 run to close out the set and take the match 3-2.
Biola improves to 12-4 in PacWest play and Concordia now sits at a conference record of 11-6 and 15-9 overall. They return home on Friday to celebrate Senior Night as the Eagles take on Hawai'i Hilo at 7 p.m. in the CU Arena.
