In the final quarter of play against the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night, the Eagles flipped the script with a fourth quarter thriller and win. Down 53-48 at the end of the third, Concordia was not out of the fight. The Eagles rallied and outscored their opponent 23-11 to take the game by a seven-point margin.
The Eagles took full advantage of the fourth quarter and scored in the first 12 seconds with layups from
Michaela Vanderklugt and
Montana Walters. After a basket from the Coyotes,
Sopavy Seng sent two free throws through the hoop to reduce the deficit to one. Concordia captured its first go ahead point of the final period on a three from Vanderklugt and after a quick lead change, Seng reversed it again with a deep shot. Tied at 60-60, an 11-4 scoring run, highlighted by Walters going 4-4 from the line with under 32 seconds to play, sealed the win.
Concordia dominated the court in multiple categories, including three-pointers. The Eagles shot 45 percent from behind the arch for 27 points, in comparison to the Coyotes who only made two. Concordia also had seven less turn overs and made 20 of 24 free throws. Seng led the charge with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. Concordia's freshman continued their production for the team. Vanderklugt scored 13 points with four assists, and made three of six three-pointers.
Kennedy Fulcher posted a double-double with 12 boards, 11 points, an assist, a block and a steal.
Reilly Walsh sunk two of two three-pointers with four assists.
The win improves the Eagles' record to 6-4 while the Coyotes, from the CCAA conference, are now 4-5.This is just the second time the Eagles have defeated Cal State San Bernardino, and the first time since the 1990-1991 season.
Concordia faces off with PacWest opponents, Dixie State on Monday in CU Arena. Tip-off with the Trailblazers (6-4, 2-1 PWC) is at 5:30 p.m.
