Women's Basketball Recap: Solid shooting from Walters delivers Dixie State a loss

Following a win on the road Saturday, Concordia Women's Basketball delivered Dixie State a conference loss Monday night in CU Arena. After taking down the Trailblazers twice during the 2016-2017 season, the Eagles aimed to extend the streak. Fueled by the sharp shooting of Montana Walters, the Eagles are now 7-4 and 4-1 in the PacWest conference.

Walters worked for the Eagles all night. She posted 19 points, six assists and two steals while draining five shots from behind the arch. Concordia also had four others contributing big points - with Sopavy Seng, Kennedy Fulcher, Michaela Vanderklugt and Riley Friauf each hitting double-digits. Freshmen Fulcher and Vanderklugt also added nine rebounds apiece.

The Eagles started out with a 4-0 lead on buckets from Portia Neale and Seng. Then, the Trailblazers put together a few plays to come within two, but Walters worked up two straight three-pointers to extend the lead to eight. Seng's layup ended the quarter and gave the Eagles a 10 point cushion.

Halfway through the second, the Trailblazers reduced the difference to four. Seng sent a deep shot through the hoop, but Dixie responded with a layup. Fulcher and Walters added back up with a layup and a three-pointer to reclaim the 10 point advantage. The Eagles held on to a seven-point lead entering the break.

Opening up the third, Dixie went on a 10-2 scoring run to come within one of the Eagles, but a clutch three-pointer from Fulcher on the pass from Neale followed by another deep shot from Vanderklugt put the Eagles ahead by seven. Tied at 50 all, Fulcher finished the third with a second deep shot for the 53-50 score.

With 10 to play and a conference victory on the line, the Eagles settled in and closed out the game by outscoring the Trailblazers 24-19. Walters welcomed the Trailblazers back to the court with a fourth, but not final three-pointer. The senior went on to tally two more assists and five final points to finish out the game.

Concordia shot 75 percent from the line, making 9-12 shots. They also knocked down 10 three-pointers, six more than Dixie State.

Saturday, December 30th, the Eagles are up against Azusa Pacific University at 5:30 p.m. in Irvine, Calif. The Cougars are 4-1 in the PacWest Conference.
