Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Emily Duran

Concordia competes with Cougars in close PacWest game

Following the holiday break, the Concordia Women's Basketball Team returned to its home court for a PacWest matchup against the No. 17 Azusa Pacific Cougars. The Eagles went toe-to-toe with APU, who sit at second in the PacWest Conference standings (5-1), for four full quarters. Despite a 40 minute battle, the Cougars pulled out a 66-57 win.

Savanna Hanson set the competitive tone early for the Cougars with a quick three-pointer, but Kennedy Fulcher immediately knocked down one of her own on the pass from Portia Neale. The Cougars extended their lead to five, but a layup from Michaela Vanderklugt and free throws from Sopavy Seng set the Eagles within one. A bucket from Riley Friauf gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, and they held the one point advantage on two more free throws from Seng. In the second, the battle ensued between the two teams. APU reacquired the lead again early, but Reilly Walsh hit a deep shot to change the pace to the Eagles favor once again. Azusa Pacific pushed back, and separated themselves with a 10-3 scoring run to finish the half up by four. The Cougars contained the Eagles to 16.13 percent from the field in the first while posting 33.33 percent themselves.

At the start of the third,  the Eagles came within four on a shot from Vanderklugt, but the Cougars' defensive press and sharp shooting hurt the Eagles productivity. Concordia was outscored 25-17 to give APU a 13-point advantage entering the final period of play. The fourth quarter was highlighted by fight from the freshman and Concordia improving its field goal shooting to 56.52 percent in the second. Vanderklugt posted seven points, including another three-pointer while Kennedy and Fulcher combined for eight more. With the Eagles applying pressure to the eight point cougar lead, Zoe March hit two free throws to lock down the 66-57 victory.

Vanderklugt paced the Eagles with a double-double from 16 points, 11 rebounds, a block and a steal. She also made 2-3 shots from behind the arch. Seng added 13 points with seven rebounds and two assists. Fulcher found success on 2-2 shots from the three-point range with five rebounds and two assists.

Concordia is now 7-5 and 4-2 in the PacWest conference. Wednesday, the Eagles aim to take down the Sea Lions of Point Loma University. The away match in San Diego, Calif. is slated for 5:30 p.m.
