Eagles Shutout by Tritons in First Road Game

The day after receiving a 5th-place ranking in the West Region, the Eagles traveled to La Jolla to take on the 2nd-place team in the West Region, the UC San Diego Tritons.  In game one of the four game series, the UCSD offense dominated as they beat the Eagles 14-0.

A single from Haloa Dudoit would be the only hit the Eagles would have through the first four innings.  UC San Diego's starter, Preston Mott, would face the minimum through four.

Brannock kept the Tritons hitless through his first three innings of work.  He ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving up six hits and four runs before turning the ball over to Bailey Collins with the bases loaded and one out.  In his pitching debut, Collins allowed two runs, both charged to Brannock, before getting the Eagles out of the inning down 6-0.

Chad Whiteaker had his first hit of the game in the top of the fifth, followed by a bunt single from Dillon Millar.  Tony Garcia followed with a single up the middle and Chad Whiteaker would be thrown out at the plate trying to score.

Collins continued to work into the fifth innings, giving up one run on three hits.  With one out in the fifth, Isaiah Bettencourt came into the game in relief of Collins.  By the end of the inning the Eagles trailed 9-0.

Bettencourt would go on to work a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, recording three strikeouts in the two innings.

The Tritons would strike again in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five, to put UCSD up 14-0.

Brannock earned the loss, going three and 1/3 and giving up six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three.  Collins came in for one inning, allowing three runs on three hits and walking one.  Bettencourt finished off the last three and 2/3 innings, giving up five runs and striking out three.  Nick Bates, Dudoit, Whiteaker, Millar, and Garcia all had one hit in the game.

The Eagles continue the four game series with the Tritons tomorrow morning at home in a double-header beginning at 11 a.m.
