Concordia closed out its final road game of the 2016-2017 season the same way the team has spent most of the year - battling to the final minutes against PacWest opponents.
Monday, the Eagles and Academy of Art met in San Fransisco, Calif. and Concordia pulled off an 82-75 win. Senior Justin Davis scored 17 points with two assists and three steals. Brian Chambers also had 17 points with two steals, two assists and a block. Mike Hauser had 15 points and one steal. Hauser's shooting was impeccable - he went 4-5 from the field and from the three-point range. Geoff Gerlach added 12 points with seven rebounds, six of which came on defense.
The Eagles opened things up with a seven point streak. Gerlach kicked things off with a layup and Davis was next with a three on the assist from Case Bruton. Davis grabbed a rebound and Mike Mellinger slammed down a dunk on a fast break to make it seven. Concordia kept its lead through the first half, closing it out up by six.
The Urban Knights tied things up less than two minutes into the second half, and then brought down another Eagle lead with 6:35 to play to tie it at 59 each. As they have all year, the Eagles had to fight off their opponent's late game pressure.
Up by seven and with 23 seconds on the clock, Hauser stole the ball and was fouled. His free throw gave the Eagles an eight point advantage. Victor Nwaba nailed a three-pointer for the Urban Knights and set them within five. They sent Davis to the line one more time. The senior sent two free throws through the hoop to extend the lead to seven. Tad Dufelmeier finished the game off with a steal.
Thursday, the Eagles will wrap up their season against the Lancers of Cal Baptist. The final home game of the year will also give Concordia a chance to celebrate Justin Davis and his accomplishments as an Eagle during the Senior Night ceremony. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in CU Arena.
