Despite 16 innings of competitive softball from the Eagles in Monday's doubleheader, late game scoring from Colorado School of Mines gave Concordia two losses.
Game 1
Concordia wasted no time posting runs. Amanda Gjertsen blasted a two run homer in the first to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Quinn kept the Mines quiet until she allowed one run in fifth. Gjertsen then switched gears and in came in on the relief for the Eagles. In the top of the seventh, the Mines managed to put up two runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles attempted to make a comeback. Michelle Lieng singled down the left field line to put the tying run on base, but was stranded. The Mines claimed the first game of the day 3-2.
Game 2
The pitching dual between Kailey Palazzolo and Colorado School of Mines' Hallie Smith kept both teams quiet. Backed by strong defenses, the two squads remained scoreless through seven, forcing the game into extra innings.
Palazzolo pitched six innings and allowed two hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Quinn returned to the mound to finish out the game for the Eagles.
Because of the international tiebreaker rule, Mines' Kara Walling was placed on second base. Clara Larson unloaded on a pitch for a two run homer over left field.
Concordia was not ready to surrender. In the bottom of the ninth, Ferguson was set at second. McKinsey Thorpe's picturesque bunt moved Ferguson to third and allowed her to reach first safely. With Gjertsen at the plate, Thorpe successfully stole second. With two outs, Alyssa Turner drew a walk to load the bases. After a strong at bat, Lauren Rodriguez's ground ball to the second baseman ended the game.
The Eagles, now 7-5-1 play Wednesday against Adelphi University. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
