After splitting the double-header on Friday with Fresno Pacific, the Eagles concluded the series with the Sunbirds with another double-header on Saturday. The two teams split once again, with FPU taking game one 4-3 on a walk-off hit, and CUI taking game two 12-3.
Game one: Eagles-3 Sunbirds-4
After sitting down the first FPU batters he saw in the first inning, Concordia starter
Mike Killeen continued to throw the ball well. After giving up one run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning, the freshman settled in and shut down the Fresno Pacific offense over the next few innings.
The Eagle offense began to heat up in the top of the third as they took advantage of Sunbird errors.
Ryan Land reached as a throw from the third baseman pulled the first baseman off the bag and a sacrifice bunt from
Haloa Dudoit would move him into scoring position. A balk moved him to third and he scored as
Jair Donovan reached on an error that would've ended the inning.
Hunter Holland led off the top of the fourth with a single through the right side.
Cade Temple stepped into the box and crushed an RBI double into right center, giving Concordia a 2-1 lead. A base hit from
Dillon Millar knocked in Temple and the Eagles held the 3-1 lead into the seventh inning.
Fresno Pacific began chipping away in the bottom of the seventh as a solo homerun brought them back within one. A two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth tied the ballgame up 3-3.
Carpenter Pagett took over on the mound for the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth and retired the first two batters on popups. Back-to-back hits produced the winning run for the Sunbirds as FPU walked-off to end game one.
Holland and Millar each went 2-4 in the game and Dudoit and Martin each swiped a bag.
Pagett received his first loss of the season and now holds a 1-1 record.
Game two: Eagles-12 Sunbirds-3
The offense really came alive for the Eagles in game two.
Fresno Pacific scored first, stringing together a few hits in the bottom of the first to bring in a run.
Game two starter
Collin Orellana sat the Sunbirds down in order in the bottom of the second and gave the Eagles the opportunity to start putting runs on the board in the top of the third.
Dudoit produced a two-out single and then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Donovan. The freshman came up clutch and brought Dudoit in with an RBI single down the left field line to tie the game at one.
Dominic Castro drew a one out walk in the top of the fourth and then stole second. A single from Millar moved Castro to third before
Joey Thompson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Martin came to the plate and laid down a successful squeeze bunt to bring in a run and give Concordia a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles took advantage of pitching troubles by the Sunbirds in the top of the sixth. Donovan and Collins drew back-to-back walks before a single from Castro brought in Donovan and moved Collins to third. Millar followed with a single to knock in Collins and Castro. After he advanced to second on a balk,
Joey Thompson was hit by another pitch. Martin wore a pitch and was awarded first to load the bases, and then Land was hit by a pitch, earning him an RBI and giving CUI a 6-1 lead. Back-to-back walks to Dudoit and Donovan, both with the bases loaded, brought in two more runs.
FPU scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth, but Orellana worked the Eagles out of the jam to maintain an 8-2 lead.
Jason McLellan took over in relief in the bottom of the sixth and sat the Sunbirds down in order.
Martin led off the top of seventh with a single up the middle. Land laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Martin to second and Dudoit crushed a double off the wall in left center to bring Martin in and extend the lead to 9-2.
Holland was awarded first base on a hit by pitch to lead off the top of the eighth. Singles from Millar, Land and Dudoit helped the Eagles tack on three more runs to give Concordia a 12-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
The only hits McLellan allowed came in the bottom of the eighth as FPU notched two to bring in a run.
Isaiah Bettencourt took over on the mound in the bottom of the ninth and held Fresno Pacific hitless to close out the game and seal the 12-3 victory.
Orellana earned the win and improves to 2-0 on the season.
Millar led the offense in game two going 4-5 with two RBIS and scoring two runs. Dudoit went 3-5 with three RBIs and a double to continue his five-game hitting streak. Land also recorded three RBIs.
Concordia improves to 9-7 in PacWest play and returns to Irvine to take on Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday. The non-conference matchup is slated for 3 p.m. at Eagles Field.
