Coming off a split with Point Loma on Friday, the Eagles changed venues and returned home to complete the series with the Sea Lions. After dropping a close battle in the first game of the day the Eagle offense turned things around and exploded for 11 runs in game two.
Game one: CUI-2 PLNU-4
Mike Killeen started on the mound for the Eagles in game one of the day's twin bill. PLNU came out swinging, striking for two runs on three hits in the top of the first.
Point Loma would strike for two more, one in the third and another in the fourth, the run in the fourth being unearned.
Concordia got on the board in the bottom of fifth.
Tony Garcia led off the inning with a single to center field.
Chris Martin drew a walk before Garcia was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Ryan Land. A groundout from
Haloa Dudoit put Martin and Land in scoring position for
Jair Donovan. Donovan sent a double into right field to knock in both runners and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Killeen settled into a rhythm over the next four innings, allowing just two hits.
Jason McLellan came in in relief in the top of the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning.
Dillon Millar and Donovan each logged two hits. Millar went 2-3 with a double and Donovan went 2-4 with two RBIs and a double.
Game two: CUI-11 PLNU-5
Senior
Collin Orellana had the ball to start game two. Point Loma struck first again, bringing in two in the top of the second.
After the Sea Lions brought another run across in the top of the third, the Eagles answered back with two runs. Martin got things started with a one out double down the right field line. Land stepped up to the plate and doubled, ending up at third on an error while Martin scored. A groundout to shortstop from Dudoit brought in Land to bring the Eagles back within one.
PLNU knocked in two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth.
The Concordia bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth.
Hunter Holland got things started with a one out single. Dan Vande Guchte drew a walk as Holland attempted to steal second. A throw from the catcher to try and get Holland ended up center field, allowing him to advance to third. Millar singled up the middle to bring in a run. An infield single from
Joey Thompson loaded the bases for Martin who knocked in another run with an RBI single. Land then reached base safely on a fielder's choice, Martin was safe at second on an error by the second baseman. Two runs came in to score on the play. Dudoit laid down a bunt single and Donovan again came to the plate with bases loaded. A groundout brought in one more run to cap off the five run inning. The Eagles lead 7-5 heading into the sixth.
Orellana sat the Sea Lions down in order in the top of the fifth.
Holland began the Eagles' half of the fifth with a big blast to left field. His homerun extended the Concordia lead to 8-5. Millar singled to right center and later scored on a Land RBI single.
The Eagles added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as Donovan led off the inning with a double. Collins followed up with a single before Holland was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Vande Guchte. He singled to bring in two runs and pad the Eagle lead at 11-5.
Carpenter Pagett came in to close out the game in the top of the seventh and did not allow a hit.
Orellana earned his third win of the season in the victory.
Collins went 3-4 in the game. Land went 2-4 and knocked in four runs while Holland, Millar and Martin also had two hits in game two. Vande Guchte had two RBIs. Every Eagle batter recorded at least one hit.
The Eagles finish the season series with Point Loma in a 2-2 split. They take a break from PacWest play to face off with the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Tuesday in San Bernardino at 6 p.m.
