The Concordia Women's Volleyball Team kicked off conference play Thursday night with a road game against Cal Baptist. Concordia dropped the match in three sets to the No. 12 Lancers in Riverside, Calif. 

Rachel Flynn posted a team high 13 kills with 10 digs and a .258 hitting percentage. Hailey Gaines was close behind with seven kills. Madeline Deters had 10 of the Eagles' 40 digs. 

Concordia captured the first three points of set one on kills from Kyra Auten and Gaines.  But a Cal Baptist 13-3 scoring run put the Lancers ahead 13-6. Three Flynn kills gave the Eagles momentum and helped them cut down the Lancer lead. The Eagles then utilized a few Cal Baptist mistakes and a kill from Jaclyn Brown to get within one. Despite the comeback, the Lancers put away four straight to claim game one 25-21. 

Three Flynn kills and a service ace from Julia DenBoer gave Concordia an early 5-2 advantage in set two, but a few Eagle errors let the Lancers creep back into a 6-6 tie. The teams battled back and forth until five consecutive points put the Lancers up 16-11. Concordia showed zero quit.  Marcela Frazzoni energized the Eagles with a kill and a solo stuff block. Then, behind 21-17, Gaines and Flynn went back to back for kills. A Lancer mishap followed by an ace from Auten reduced the lead to one. After a timeout from Cal Baptist, Auten continued the service pressure. Amber Rose's kill and one more Lancer mistake gave the Eagles a 23-22 lead. After calling their second timeout, the Lancers tallied three straight kills to take set two 25-23. 

Set three, Concordia started out with a small 6-5 lead. The Lancers embarked on an eight point run to claim a lead they did not relinquish the remainder of the set. Cal Baptist won the third 25- 11.

Concordia is now 4-4 and 0-1 in conference. The Eagles host their first PacWest home match on Saturday at 5 p.m. in CU Arena against Biola University. Saturday's game will also be the NCAA Div. II  Kick-Off Celebration.
