Huerta’s Heroics Push Eagles Past Sharks in PacWest Opener

IRVINE, Calif. – It was a hard fought battle on the turf as the Eagles opened up PacWest play at home against Hawai'i Pacific.  Though the Sharks got on the board first, Jose Huerta's late heroics led the Eagles to a 2-1 win.

The first half did not see any scoring, but Hawai'i Pacific outshot the Eagles 4-1.  Concordia goalie Saul Al Ocampo had three saves in the half to keep the Sharks off the board.

The first goal of the game came from Hawai'i Pacific's Josch Cuerten.  He utilized a pass from Christopher Galang and took a shot from outside the 18 into the bottom left corner to put the Sharks up 1-0.

Huerta evened the score in the 78th minute with his second goal of the season.  In the middle of a scramble in front of the goal following a free kick, Huerta netted a ball into the bottom right corner.

Ocampo saved a shot in in the 83rd minute, helping to keep the game tied at one to force overtime.

With two minutes remaining in the first period of overtime, Huerta scored the golden goal for the Eagles to put them on top 2-1 over the Sharks.  Michael Oakson sent him a pass that he shot from the top of the box to the bottom left corner.

"We just have to keep trusting the process and trusting each other," said Huerta. "We have to keep moving the ball around until we get an opportunity, and we got that opportunity and we scored."

The Eagles continue PacWest play on Saturday when they take on the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans at 4 p.m. at Eagles Field.
