Eagles Clipped by Cougars

The Eagles looked to bounce back on Saturday against Azusa Pacific after dropping last night's match to Notre Dame de Namur in four sets. The Cougars had other plans, though, as they swept the Eagles in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-11) as Concordia falls to 4-7 overall, 0-4 in PacWest play.

Rachel Flynn and Hailey Gaines were the only two Eagles with double digit kills with 10 each.  Gaines posted a team high .312 hitting percentage.  Jessica Diederich led the way with 16 assists and Marcela Frazzoni led the defense with eight digs.

Concordia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set as Amber Rose got things started with a kill.  Flynn strung two kills together off sets from Diederich and Frazzoni to extend the Eagle lead.  The Cougars responded to the quick start by rallying back with an 11-1 run to take a six point lead in the set.  The Eagles fought back with their own run to take a 15-13 lead due in part to an ace by Flynn and a momentum-swinging kill by Gaines off a set from Logan Grove. The two opponents battled for the lead, trading points until 19-19 when APU pulled ahead with six straight points to win the set 25-19.

A kill from Cindy Tran looked to get the momentum back on the Eagles' side in the second set as they jumped out in front 2-0.  The Cougars took control and never looked back, gaining a 7-4 lead on four straight points. Azusa Pacific padded their lead, maintaining a cushion of four to five points throughout the set.  The Cougar offense continued to dominate, scoring five points including three straight kills from Natalie Klapp to take a commanding 23-15 lead.  They would take set two 25-17 to take a two set lead over the Eagles.

APU kept their momentum rolling into the third set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before Kyra Auten and Gaines put one back on a block to put the Eagles on the board.  Gaines and Kylie Breitenwischer each added kills, but they weren't enough to slow the Cougars' roll as the lead grew to 16-6.  Azusa Pacific took the third set by a score of 25-11 to sweep the Eagles in three straight sets.

Concordia looks to snap their losing streak when they play host to the #12 ranked California Baptist Lancers on September 30 at 5 p.m.
