Eagles force overtime, fall to APU

IRVINE, CALIF. — The Concordia Women's Soccer Team battled to the bitter end with Azusa Pacific University, losing 3-2 on a golden goal in the first overtime. This 2017 matchup marked the third consecutive year the Eagles and Cougars went to overtime and the first time the game has ended in favor of APU. Goals by Reena Kang and Carmany Jones put the Eagles on the board after a quick start by Azusa Pacific, who was picked first in the PacWest preseason poll.

The Eagles had their work cut out for them defensively as APU pressed from the beginning. At 1:25 into the first half, APU forward Randi Macadangdang ran right through the CUI back line and hit a post smasher from the top of the box. Retrieving her own rebound, Macdangdang found the back of the net for the first goal of the match.

The intensity of play increased immensely. Concordia seemed to awaken with drives forward resulting in shots by Jones, Kryssa Johnson and Morgan Serres. APU countered with a shot soon thereafter and the back and forth play continued. In the 32nd minute of the first half, the Cougars extended the gap to 2-0 with a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner of the net. The first half ended on a shot by Kang that hit the crossbar and a 2-0 APU lead.

CUI came out strong in the second period, gaining yardage and forcing the ball into the Cougars defensive half. APU countered with a few dead end long balls that caused Concordia keeper Kaelyn Whitcomb to come off her line for the grab.

The Green and Gold moved the ball around outside the opponent's 18 yard box. Jones dribbled into the box and a Cougar defender stopped the attack causing a deflection that landed straight at the feet of Reena Kang. Kang ripped a first time shot into the bottom left corner of the net, giving Concordia its first goal and some faith.

Continuing the offense for CUI, shots by Megan Hussey and Marianna Maldonado missed the net. With two minutes left in regulation, Keely Abt flicked a pass through the APU backline to Jones who drilled the bouncing ball into the upper righthand corner of the goal. The second half ended in a 2-2 draw, as the Eagles force Azusa Pacific into overtime.

Just 50 seconds into OT, the Cougars scored the golden goal. A cross-field pass and shot into the bottom left corner ended the match 3-2 in favor of APU.

The Concordia Eagles return to the turf on Saturday, September 30th against Fresno Pacific University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm.
