The Concordia Men's Soccer Team dominated in their 2017 home opener, earning their first victory as an official NCAA member. Three different Eagles contributed to the scoring in the 5-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino, including
Connor Gordon who posted his first career hat trick.
Gordon opened up the scoring in the 25
th minute of the first half.
Ari Claro sent a pass high to Gordon who knocked it into the top right corner of the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later Gordon struck again, this time utilizing an assist from
Ether Bustos to pass the ball into the open net to extend the Eagle lead to 2-0.
In the 51
st minute of the game, just a few minutes into the second half, Gordon drew the goalie from the net and scored on a shot into the open net for his third goal of the game. His first career hat trick will go down in the Concordia record books as the first in the NCAA era for the Eagles.
The Eagle offense continued their charge as
Eric Torres scored his first goal of the season with a shot to the bottom right corner, putting the Eagles up 4-0.
With less than 10 minutes left in the game,
Jose Huerta put up his first goal of the season extending the lead to 5-0.
In his first game back with the Eagles, senior goalkeeper
William Whiddon shut out the Coyotes. He had four saves in the game.
The Eagles outshot the Coyotes 11-8 with eight of being shots on goal and five for goals.
Connor Gordon attributed his success on the field to his teammates and believes there are big things in store for them this season.
"It was the product of the whole team pushing for me, pushing for each other and working hard so that we could come together and really put together a whole team performance that was indicative of who we are. I think this is a statement for the rest of the season, that the first game was a fluke"
With Saturday's win, the Eagles sit at a record of 1-1. They head to Cal State LA on Thursday to take on the Golden Eagles at 7 p.m.
