Hussey lifts Eagles to PacWest win over APU

IRVINE, Calif. — In its second PacWest conference game in three days, Eagles women's soccer (6-6-1, 4-3-1) hosted the Azusa Pacific Cougars (5-9-1, 5-2-1) on Wednesday afternoon. Concordia struck in the first half and held APU off throughout regulation time to earn a 1-0 win.

In the squads last meeting, the match went into double overtime and the Eagles pulled out the win after 110 minutes and a golden goal. Today, Concordia outshot Azusa Pacific 16 to six and found the back of the net once.

Towards the end of the first half, Eagles offense pressed into its attacking third. Cienah Reed had the ball at her feet on the right side of the pitch, passed to Kryssa Johnson who touched it to McKenna Carrillo and Carrillo chipped it back towards the penalty spot. Megan Hussey started her run through the middle of the 18-yard-box and one touched the ball past the keeper.

"As I was running in, I saw Mckenna chip that ball. It had already passed Kryssa so I decided to keep going because I already knew that I had the goalie beat on an angle," Hussey said.

Fighting off the Cougars for the remainder of the game, the Eagles came out on top 1-0 to put a number up in the conference win column.

"This win was major. I think this was the first game that we were actually able to play as a team and play for each other," Hussey said. "McKenna, one of our seniors, gave this great pep talk before the game. She told us what it meant to be a senior and play for Concordia and this program so I think it all just encouraged us to get our stuff together."
