Ospina Boots Eagles Past Argonauts

IRVINE, Calif. - Willy Ospina collected the game-winning goal for Concordia in the 87th minute to help the host Eagles escape with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon over Notre Dame de Namur.

Ospina tallied his first goal of the season in timely fashion to help the Eagles post their third win in four games.  Connor Gordon drew the attention of the Notre Dame defense and amid the chaos in the box, the ball bounced from Gordon to Ospina. The junior from Laguna Hills was then able to convert on the left side.

Gordon moved one step closer to the all-time scoring record in Concordia men's soccer history held by Jeff Clark (50 career goals) when he found the back of the net late in the first half.  Gordon earned the 45th goal of his career after Jose Huerta dribbled up the center from midfield and fed him with a perfectly timed pass to his right side.  Gordon unleashed a shot that found a home in the left corner of the goal and the Eagles led 1-0 at intermission.

The score remained the same until late in the second half.  Notre Dame drew a controversial penalty kick after both teams were tagged with multiple foul calls for a sequence of about ten minutes.  With emotions running high, Naia Graham converted the penalty kick to give the Argonauts the equalizer.

But less than six minutes later, Ospina was able to save the day for the Eagles.  Concordia goalkeeper Ricardo Medina also made multiple smart decisions to preserve the lead, including a save in the final three minutes of regulation after Ospina had put the Eagles in front.

Concordia improved to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in PacWest action.

The Eagles will host their final two home games this coming Thursday and Saturday as the first part of doubleheaders with the women's squads.  On Thursday, Nov. 1 the Eagles host Dominican at 1 p.m. before holding Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 10:30 a.m. against Holy Names.
